5 Ways To Instil Love Of Ramadan To Our Children

Alhamdulillah, we are in the second phase of Ramadan, thus we have to put more  focus on ibadah before Ramadan leaves us. In fact, the month of Ramadan should be an excitement event for the children too.

For those of us who are parents, we have to encourage our children to be part of this month and imbibe love for Ramadan from an early age. If not, Ramadan will passing by without we even notice.

Even though children who are not reach puberty yet do not required to fast, it is good for them to participate in fasting so they will understand about Ramadan. They also can learn about the values of generosity, devotion and benefits during Ramadan.

Fasting is one of the five Pillars of Islam. It is really recommended for parents, when we are planning for Ramadan activities, do include the five Pillars of Islam lesson that can be relate during fasting. For example, lessons to take ablution, to perform prayer, to give charity to people who really needed and many more.

This is one of famous hadith about the five Pillars of Islam:

Narrated Ibn Umar (RA), Prophet Muhammad SAW said:

Islam is based on (the following) 5 Pillars (principles):

  1. To testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
  2. To offer the (compulsory congregation) prayers dutifully and perfectly.
  3. To pay zakat (obligatory charity)
  4. To perform Hajj (Pilgrimage of Mecca)
  5. To observe fast during the month of Ramadan. (Sahih Bukhari)

In this article, I would like to share five ways to instil love of Ramadan to our children.

1) Ramadan Decoration

Ramadan decoration is the most important to build Ramadan environment that enhance the children to be excited for Ramadan. Parents should plan the decorations and do together with children.

They will be happy when their art decorations display at the room. Usually, the decorations have stars and crescent moon with banner of “Ramadan Kareem”.

2) Ramadan Storytelling

Storytelling about Ramadan can enhance the kids’ understanding of the holy month. First of all, parents should list down the points. The delivery of story should be simple and understandable.

We could read some books about Ramadan. Iwould recommend a story book ”My First Ramadan” by Karen Katz that summarized into these points:

  • Introduce about months in Islam.
  • What is fasting?
  • What is important of sahoor?
  • The important of charity.
  • What is 5 Pillars of Islam

3) Set Ramadan Goal

Before Ramadan even starts, we could set our Ramadan goals for this year. Parents should encourage their children to have their own Ramadan goals too.

We can do that by explaining the benefits of the goal and the extra reward when we perform ibadah during this holy month. Beside that, parents should set a simple goal that is easy to be achieved.  For examples, “one good deed, one day”, “learn new surah”, “learn daily doa”.

4) Do Ramadan Chart

The purpose of Ramadan chart is to encourage children to practice fasting, to perform solat, do good deeds and love to read Al-Quran.

There have many types of Ramadan chart printable you can find in the internet.  This is one of example of chart that you can integrated with colours, the balloon theme.

The children will colour a balloon for each solat, so it will be five balloons at the end of the day or colour balloon for good deeds that they do during Ramadan.

5) Go To The Mosque

First of all, parents must encourage children to love to pray even they are small. When it is time to pray, ask children to pray together. They will watch then imitate the action of their parents.

So, when parents go to Terawih, parents should bring their children too. We can bring their own prayer mat, it will be more like a game than actual prayer but it is okay for a start. We should  tell them that they will get double rewards when they perform prayer that will encourage them not to play with friends in the mosque.

Finally, there are many other Ramadan activities that parents can get in internet. It is depends on parents to choose which activity that is suitable for your children.

In this article I just summarized some of the activities that are easy to conduct. The most important thing is that the children would happy and enjoy Ramadan celebration.

May Allah grant you most reward on your ibadah. Kullu ‘am wa antum bil khair.
