Myanmar Genocide: Where is humanity?
The genocide in Myanmar brings back the dark memories from the Balkan Crisis in early 90s. Almost a similar situation existed back then. Muslim minorities were targeted by savage rulers, either for power or to occupy land. In the case of Rakhine state in Myanmar, there is no end in sight.
Many tried to escape to Bangladesh, then again only to be sent back to Myanmar. The Bangladeshi government neither helped nor initiated mediation. It is as though humanity has lost its identity. Apparently the closest neighbours saw no necessity to help those in need. How can one turn a blind eye towards women and children who were raped and others burned alive? Some were even battered to death.
One of the culprits of this movement is a Buddhist monk named Ashin Wirathu. Though we do not accuse the Buddhists of terrorism, yet we are appalled by their silence. Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) has not said a word to date.
MCCBCHST strives for freedom of religion in Malaysia. However these rights seem to be for a select few, whereas others can rest in peace. As the saying goes failure to defend the oppressed is a way to help the oppressor(s).
Why is there silence from leaders in the ASEAN community? Can we only watch when atrocities occur in our backyards? Is there no way the military in Myanmar can be controlled? Muslim leaders and scholars are quick to condemn harmful acts by Muslims. The opposite nonetheless not necessarily true. Why is it so?
Aung San Suu Kyi was once hailed as a beacon of peace and hope. She even won the Nobel Peace Prize. All hopes faded and never saw the light of day. Ostensibly everything was merely the facade. She chose to ignore the situation by saying that she was not sure if the Rohingya people are even nationals of Myanmar. Perhaps murders in her homeland are not a matter of concern.
One wonders if the impunity enjoyed by the Military of Myanmar is eternal in nature? Would the human race ever see the value of humanity?
